National Cyber Security Awareness Month began in 2004 as a collaborative effort headed by the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Trade Commission, state governments, major universities and the Internet industry. The goal of the October month-long focus on cyber security is to raise awareness of and provide information about the need to protect electronic data and equipment.
